The Fractured Dimension
The Fractured Dimension "Towards the Mysterium"
The Fractured Dimension "Towards the Mysterium"

Excellent debut from Missouri trio (keyboards, bass, drums) The Fractured Dimension combines classical piano themes with heavy prog rock arrangements and masterful soloing to great effect. Imagine if you will a band playing heavy, almost but not quite metallic, rock music in multiple time signatures with a keyboardist the technical equal to Patrick Moraz & Jordan Rudess. Imagine also that the band let the keyboardist write most of the music! And then they enlisted several very good guitarists to come in and solo over certain sections. This reminds me of some parts of the first Moraz solo album ("i") mixed with the most prog sections of a really good Dream Theater album and played with strength and conviction. The keyboards of Jimmy Pitts are the focus which gives "Towards the Mysterium" street cred with the prog crowd. The guitarists add just enough metallic edge here & there to appeal to fans of Dream Theater or Gordian Knot. There are many fantastic piano sections as well as great electric keys & even a section for 'prepared piano'. According to the liner notes this is inspired (at least partially) by the work of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin. Scriabin, just 43 when he died in 1915, "sought to bring the arts, and in turn humanity, together in a rapturous apocalyptic enlightenment of sight, sound, and unabashed expression. This final offering meant to unify and elevate mankind would have been known as the Mysterium." Scriabin was perhaps best known for writing nearly unplayable piano works that challenged the virtuosos of his day. Still his works were highly melodic and innovative while pushing the limits of tonal musical thinking in the late 19th & early 20th centuries. He is remembered as a great eccentric genius. While the music of The Fractured Dimension doesn't draw upon Scriabin for melodic/thematic material they certainly embrace his spirit of "progressive" idealism! 8 stars out of 10. A highly recommended release!
