Great new release from vocalist Sarah Pillow is a musical extension of her debut on the Buckyball label, "Nuove Musiche" from 2000. On that release Ms.Pillow performed jazz-rock arrangements of 15th & 16th century songs by Dowland, Purcell and Sances, a.o. It was a great success so Sarah and her husband, vibraphonist Marc Wagnon, decided to try it again. To magnify the achievement of transforming these respected classical songs into modern, groove-laden arrangements they came up with the idea that the new album should be a double CD. The first disc in "Remixes" has 13 songs from the 1500s & 1600s sung in English, French, Italian and Latin and played on period instruments. In other words it is a classical recital, a 'straight' reading of the musical scores. The instrumentation is harpsichord, organ, lute, viola de gamba (sort of an early cello), violin and Sarah's gorgeous mezzo-soprano voice. Then disc two is the exact same songs in exactly the same order but in modern rock interpretations with keyboards, mallet percussion, guitars, bass, drums and percussion. The backing band is Tunnels with John Goodsall-guitar, Percy Jones-basses, Marc Wagnon-vibes, midi mallet controller, keyboards, percussion, Frank Katz-drums + Susan & Vanderlei Pereira on all manner of Brazilian percussion instruments. This is unique & beautiful music. Sarah's voice is a treasure! Take a chance & broaden the scope of your musical vision. You won't be disappointed. Fans of bands like White Willow might be particularly interested in this as will fans of Tunnels or "early music" in general. Because Sarah comes to classical music via jazz and rock, her treatments of the modern arrangements are quite varied. She can sound like Sarah Brightman one moment and Grace Slick the next!
This specially price two CD set receives ZNR's highest recommendation. Repeated listenings will reveal more and more! That's the test of first rate music, isn't it!?!
