This CD is a solo project of Markus Stauss played almost entirely on bass saxophone. Now, if that sounds like it would be boring, perhaps it would be in the hands of a lesser musician. This CD is amazingly varied and not like what you would expect from a solo saxophone album! It is subtitled "Bass Saxophon Solo & Extras". The 'extras' are electronic treatments of what Markus plays on the bass saxophone. There is a little overdubbing in places but the vast majority of this sounds as though it were recorded straight from the saxophone into the microphone! This will please Markus' fans whether they prefer Ulterior Lux or Spaltklang! I should stress that this is NOT a free-jazz album. There are clearly compositions at work and though some of this could be classified as 'jazz' many will hear it as a work of 'classical' writing! As usual, the music we might expect from a Markus Stauss project is not the music we get, making Markus all the more brilliant. Certainly this is a CD for an adventurous listener but it is another gem in the Markus Stauss catalog of adventurous music!
