*********OUT-OF-PRINT ! ! ! ***** LAST COPIES ! ! ! *********** The second album (now out-of-print) from this Swiss quartet takes them much farther! Their debut, while good enough, was just the appetizer. The same line-up this time: Remy Strauli (Yolk) drums & keyboards, Oliver Vogt on viola, Stephan Brunner on electric bass and Markus Stauss (Ulterior Lux, Uberfall, a.o.) tenor and soprano saxes. This time the band is much tighter & the compositions darker and more interesting. Eight compositions (all in the 5 - 8 min range) take the group through many moods and changes. If one had to make comparisons, you could say that this music is the perfect marriage of Curlew & Univers Zero. The arrangements rely heavily on the viola of Olivier Vogt mingling & bouncing off of Markus Stauss' sax playing. The way Vogt plays recalls some of the early Univers Zero albums or maybe even Art Zoyd. Markus' sax playing is superb throughout recalling George Cartwright of Curlew, Lol Coxhill's soprano solos, Gato Barbieri's powerful tenor sound or even the great John Coltrane! Stephan Brunner's bass playing is very solid recalling Guy Seger (UZ) in places and the drumming by Yolk member Remy Strauli is sort of like a cross between Pip Pyle and Chris Cutler. He also injects some eerie keyboard passages that recall the experiments in Germany in the early 70s. This is a powerful record not to be missed! Highest recommendation!!
