Fantastic new release by Louisville's own French TV finds founder/bassist/composer Mike Sary and long time drummer Jeff Gard in good company. Joined this time around on three of the six tracks by none other than Boud Deun guitarist Shawn Persinger and on five of the tracks by keyboardist Steve Katsikas (Little Atlas)! The sound is completed by saxist Adam Huffer, guitarists Joee Conroy (Ut Gret) and Roy Strattman, keyboardist Paolo Botta (Yugen) with guest appearances by French TV alumni Warren Dale on saxophone & clarinet and Chris Smith on guitar. As with all great progressive music the music of French TV bears an unmistakable imprint - a certain quality that can only be described by referencing the source itself. That is to say nothing sounds quite like French TV in the same way that nothing really sounds like Frank Zappa. In the same manner that, despite all of their imitators, nothing really sounds like King Crimson or Genesis. All of our favorites have a certain idiosyncratic way of working with melody or rhythm that make them something unique and special. Of course, if you get what I mean to say, the same can be said of French TV. Composer Sary's way of constructing a tune is unique and even when he is collaborating with another writer that singularity of vision cuts through like a lighthouse in a fog. In short, there is nothing else like it. For the genre of instrumental progressive rock music French TV have very few peers. And in a field of nine studio albums and a live release, all of which are excellent, "I Forgive You All My Unhappiness" stands as perhaps their best to date! Six smokin' tunes all in the 6 to 9 minute range that blend prog rock and jazz fusion and avant composition into a powerful listening experience. Highly recommended.
