Garamond "Quant'altro"

This Italian group released this album in 2007 consisting of various pieces recorded from 2001-2005. A very powerful sound with its roots firmly in the European classical tradition. As for their 'rock' influences it would be bands like Opus Avantra, After Crying, Stormy Six & Henry Cow. However, I can say without reservation that this is unlike anything I have ever heard that even pretended to be "rock music". The immediately obvious focus is on the incredible vocals of Laura Agostinelli. She has an extremely wide expressive range and depth in her singing, sounding one minute like Annie Haslam singing music from a modern avant-garde composer and the next minute like Dagmar Krause (of Henry Cow/Slapp Happy) [but, it goes without saying, without the heavy German accent] and then off to something completely her own! Musically I hear little bits of lots of things from Stormy Six and Henry Cow to American early 20th century composer Samuel Barber and Hungarian prog group After Crying! Other highlights include the keyboard work of Danilo Orlandini and the guest violinist Cristiano Giuseppetti but the entire band plays wonderfully. This is the kind of disc that, if you enjoy something a little more avant but still grounded in melodicism, you will want to play again right after it finishes! It receive our highest recommendation to listeners who enjoy their prog rock mixed with modern classical music!
