The 2010 release of Mastermind is a heavy prog-metal opus that serves their legacy well. The trademark Mastermind sound is here but it is tempered by a more mainstream metal production and some rather more "commercial" songwriting. [gasp: there is even a brief foray into rap-rock ala Rage Against the Machine] Having said that I will tell you that as a long-time Mastermind fan and supporter "Insomnia" does not disappoint. Bill & Rich Berends are joined by (and I can say it now since it has been over 10 years since the release of the astounding "Excelsior!" CD) long-time collaborator Jens Johansson on keyboards & relative newcomer Tracy McShane on vocals. They are joined on 3 tracks by guest bassists Chris Eike & Greg Hagen. The songs are mostly on the short side and are concise bursts of metal energy tempered by their unquenchable progressive rock spirit. Tracy's vocals are gutsy but not guttural and give Mastermind the push towards the metal side of things that they were perhaps seeking. By contrast, previous singer Lisa Bouchelle's voice was more ethereal and less urgent. Tracy's delivery is closer to a hard-rock chanteuse like Ann Wilson of Heart. Released by the respected Swedish prog-metal label Lion Music "Insomnia" is a very good release from long standing purveyors of quality heavy progressive music!
