Belgian-based "chamber-rock" band Univers Zero are back with another masterpiece. If you are unfamiliar with UZ they started out in the late 70s as a mostly acoustic group combining a rock rhythm section with classical music ideas & instruments (violin, bassoon, a.o.). They moved gradually towards a more electric sound culminating with the album "Heatwave" in 1986, called it quits and went away for more than a decade. Returning in 1999 with "The Hard Quest" as a mostly studio group using samplers and computers to make alot of the sounds on the next 3 releases. Returning to live work in the mid 2000's the band have returned to the interaction of live musicians on their 2010 release "Clivages". Tightly composed works taking 20th century classical music and rock bands like King Crimson & Magma as their starting point, then giving the pieces the unique Univers Zero stamp! Here is what All Music Guide has to say "...an indispensable release for anyone who believes that "Bartók" and "rock" can fit comfortably in the same sentence.” – and their label Cuneiform sums it up beautifully by stating.... "A tremendously strong work from a band who have a very full catalog of essential discs!" If you don't know Univers Zero, this is as good a place to start as any.
