Combining the ambiance of Brian Eno with ECM jazz stylings is no small feat. Ergo do a very good job of this and their first release for Cuneiform is very appealing. Fender Rhodes/synths/effects, trombone/computer & drums is the quite unusual instrumentation for this great release. This will appeal to folks who like the more ambient releases from ECM (Terje Rypdal, Ebehard Weber, etc) and will probably also appeal to those who like the atmospheres produced occasionally by groups such as Radiohead, Flaming Lips or Sigur Ros (albeit without the modern rock-song bits!). As you can see I am having some difficulty putting Ergo's sound into words which is a testament to the amount of success they have achieved in forging a new and relatively fresh musical environment! Calling music like this 'avant-garde' probably does it a disservice since that term conjures up comparisons with angular, difficult-to-listen-to musics and that isn't what Ergo are about. However, in the literal sense of the term which simply means "forward thinking" (or is sometimes translated as "ahead-of-its-time") then I think it is appropriate and meaningful. Ergo pull you in gradually and continually and before you even realize it you are hooked. At least I was! One of the best releases from the prolific Cuneiform label in quite some time!
