While the previous Cuneiform release of this unusual band was a fascinating mixture of Americana, post-war German cabaret song stylings and forward-looking "progressive" tendancies with hints at Carla Bley, Kurt Weill and Samla Mammas Manna, "Boy From Black Mountain" is a much more earthy and accessible release. Taking its starting point from the many American-based song styles of the 50s & 60s and adding nearly a quarter century of developments while peering simultaneously into the worlds of jazz & rock music - if only briefly & fleetingly - Beat Circus have created as American an album as is possible in today's multi-cultural world. Every bit the equal of the best of the other progressive-Americana group Camper van Beethoven, Beat Circus have made an album of great depth and character. Die-hard Euro-prog fans might not enjoy this group but listeners whose tastes are more eclectic might want to enter this captivating musical world.
