Archival release by this ELP-ish band from the mid-70s featuring an unknown Swiss keyboardist who would become famous just a year later as the 'guy who replaced Rick Wakeman' in Yes! Patrick Moraz is much more influenced by Keith Emerson here than he would appear to be just that short time later. Heavy organ and some synth leads really recall ELP. And why not? Since Refugee is basically The Nice with Moraz filling Emerson's position, the comparisons are unavoidable! Moraz's playing is really stellar as he rips through organ passages that would surely leave Keith suitably impressed (if not with his chin on the table!). The highlights are Moraz's playing and Brian Davison's surprisingly fine drumming. Lee Jackson's bass playing is certainly up to the task but, as with any of the Nice albums or his later rock forays, his vocals are something to be reckoned with. Now I personally like his singing most of the time as it has an earthiness & honesty not often found in 'prog' singers, but even I must admit that it is totally over-the-top on this live recording. The upside is that there isn't too much singing as the focus is here (as it was on their only studio album) on the fine instrumental work. The recording is thoroughly acceptable but not stunning. Anyway, once again Voiceprint finds the unfindable! Who would have thought that a live concert by Refugee would surface at this late date.
A must for ELP/Nice & Yes collectors but also a great find for fans of keyboard-driven 70s prog in general.
