Soft Machine "Floating World - Live"

Allan Holdsworth-electric guitar, violin Mike Ratledge-Lowrey Organ, Fender Rhodes, synthesizers Karl Jenkins-oboe, soprano sax, recorder, electric & acoustic piano Roy Babbington-electric bass guitar John Marshall-drums, percussion "This CD marks the first release of a live performance by Soft Machine's "Bundles" line-up featuring Allan Holdsworth on guitar. This concert, recorded for Radio Bremen in January 1975, consists of most of the "Bundles" material, which hadn't yet come out although in the can since the previous summer, plus a couple of band improvs and solo showcases for Mike Ratledge, Roy Babbington & John Marshall." (liner notes from the CD) ZNR adds: Wow! This really is a find not only for Soft Machine fans but for Holdsworth collectors as well! The sound is really good and balanced and the performances are SO good that mere words can't even begin to describe them! From "Bundles" we get "The Floating World", "Bundles", "Land of the Bag Snake" (with what may be Holdworth's best solo ever!), "The Man Who Waved At Trains", "Peff", and "Hazard Profile, part one". There is a great version of "Penny Hitch" from "Seven" and a pre-release version of "Song of Aeolus" from the album "Softs" which wouldn't be recorded for another year! A Roy Babbungton bass solo called "Ealing Comedy", a John Marshall solo called "J.S.M." and a Mike Ratledge/John Marshall duet called "North Point". Plus two fabulous group improvs called "Riff III" & "Endgame". And we get to hear a fantastic Allan Holdsworth violin solo in "The Man Who Waved At Trains"! (I think if I read a Holdsworth interview again where he says he can't play this instrument I'll have to find him and force him to listen to that solo over & over again!) This is one great Soft Machine release even in the face of all the great Soft Machine releases in the last 2-3 years!!! A standing ovation for Soft Machine and for MoonJune Records for finding and releasing this jewel!!! BRAVO!!!!! [MoonJune Records]
