Foti is the bassist for the Massachusetts-based instrumental prog rock trio Electrum. An unlikely location for such a group they are based in a small town called Billerica, MA (about 20-30 miles outside of Boston) and have produced two fine CDs so far - "Frames of Mind" (their out-of-print and very Rush-influenced debut) and "Standard Deviation" (their second release which is also now out-of-print, though there are some copies left - see Electrum on this site!) Getting back to Gino's solo work, it should be said that his CDs bear very little resemblance to the group's work. Gino plays almost everything himself (including basses, guitars, and keys). Based around themes that make me think of Bo Hansson, Mike Oldfield or Jade Warrior and some lush arrangements that these groups would be proud of and incorporating some virtuoso bass playing ala Michael Manring or Percy Jones, "Orbis Terrarum" is a great instrumental prog album with many influences. Not strictly 'rock' music, but neither is this something that in years past would have been labelled 'new age'. Infact alot of this reminds me of some of Pekka Pohjola's work - beautiful melodies played in a semi-classical style with some very distinctive bass work! If you enjoy lush instrumental prog then Gino's CDs are definitely right up your alley! Highly recommended to fans of the musicians/groups mentioned in this review, especially Pekka Pohjola's solo work!
