Abel Ganz
Abel Ganz "Shooting Albatross"
Abel Ganz "Shooting Albatross"

The new release by Scottish prog band Abel Ganz is their most accomplished yet. One of the earliest groups from the 80s to define the 'prog revival' spearheaded by more high-profile bands like Marillion, IQ & Pallas, Abel Ganz have been an underground favorite for fans of the genre. Their first two releases were even cassette-tape-only affairs that were real throwbacks to the post-Gabriel-era Genesis works of the late 70s. After a long hiatus the band reformed in the 90s to produce a very stylish album called "Dangers of Strangers" which was very well-received by the prog community at large. Still overshadowed by the success of fellow 90s travellers like The Flower Kings & Spock's Beard, Abel Ganz took another long sabbatical and finally have come up with a fine symphonic rock release that was well-worth the wait! Both in terms of writing and playing/production "Shooting Albatross" is a real winner. Four long tracks that take the listener through many moods. The focal point is the keyboard work of founding member Hew Montgomery. Sounding like a cross between Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman and Richard Wright, Hew has a large sound palate at his command. The other members play very well, too with excellent contributions from guitarist Davie Mitchell and co-founder Hugh Carter on lead vocals, 12-string, classical guitar & flute. Drummer Denis Smith returns from the 'Dangers of Strangers' era and newcomers Stevie Donnelly on bass and Mick MacFarlane on vocals & guitar fill out the sound nicely. The packaging is nice, too. A triple fold-out digipak with 8-page booklet with all the lyrics & credits. Perhaps this time around Abel Ganz will get their fair share of recognition! "Shooting Albatross" will please fans of both symphonic rock, for its expanded and lengthy excursions, and prog revivalists for its obvious homage to its roots. Recommended.
