The great duet album from Spaltklang/Ulterior Lux saxophonist Markus Stauss and Yugen/The Night Watch guitarist Francesco Zago. It is an example of what happens when two highly creative and adventurous musicians get together to have a conversation. Beautifully played & flawlessly recorded "Zauss" is an almost perfect album. Stauss' tone alone is something many a sax player would sell his soul for! Avoiding many of the cliches that hamper alot of current 'modern jazz' recordings these two musicians have forged a completely unique sound and have made what we can only hope is not the last collaboration. Zago's soundscapes are sometimes similar to what Fripp & Pinhas have done in the past in their conception but he has managed to fashion a new sound palate that is all his own. And it is frequently the perfect platform for Stauss' beautiful explorations. This is truly a disc that gets better with every successive listening, revealing new nuances that weren't discovered before! Certainly this is for the adventurous listener but it will reward again and again. This will surely appeal to fans of Stauss' previous work as well as fans of Pinhas and also fans of improvisation. Another great release from one of the great unsung heroes of the current music scene!
